This is a tough one. I do ‘put my work out there’ in a number of different ways. I am a member of an iPad painters group, a sketchcrawl group, an Urban Sketchers group and Dr Sketchy. The trouble with all of these forums is that more often than not they are simply a way of gauging how successful your work is from the number of ‘likes’ you get. I rarely get what I would call constructive and useful feedback from these forums, which is why feedback from tutors is so very helpful, since it is focussed and critical. I think what I’ll do is blatantly ask for constructive feedback on the OCA student site, and see if I get any? The other way of gaining critiques is of course to critique my own work, which I think I do all the time. I do look at a lot of other work, at exhibitions and online, and at other student blogs, to weigh myself against their work and the solutions they came up with. This helps keep my thinking alive and I hope that shows through in my work too. I went to see Angie Lewin at the Yorkshire Sculpture Park yesterday and what I really loved about looking at her work for the close observation of very ordinary small details in nature which she has then used to brilliant effect in her designs. I also recently bought and downloaded the film Helvetica, which was great for context and reflection on the continual use, misuse and inventiveness with the font Helvetica. Well, here goes, off to the student site to seek proper feedback on my work so far …..
