I got hold of some copyright free engravings and had great fun adding them to the book covers and using transparency to make them more or less dominant. These are the images I worked from.
I added the sculpted head behind the Country of the Blind image. The blank eyes seemed to make the sculpture represent the whole country of the blind. I tried the other related image, of the person with the blank glasses but felt that this was too identifiably an individual, whereas the sculpture has a more generic feel.
Then I had a go with ideas for Mr Kipps using one of the women he gets embroiled with in the image. Then I realized I really needed two women in the image but unobtrusively. That’s because Mr Kipps has two important relationships with women which change the course of his life. experimented with a few options.
I tried to come up with a similar idea for the book cover The Shape of Things to Come but realised it would be more of a challenge to find a satisfactory image to work with the overall concept. I found an image of a furnace and tried to use that but feel that this doesn’t work altogether successfully with the abstract circle/vortex shape.
Here’s the final two other book covers, improved from my original submission I think.
